NLP Exploration by Analyzing Tim Ferriss Transcripts Using R

After finding important words for each document, I turned to topic modeling. I manually iterated through a variety of potential count of topics (from two to 10), displaying anywhere from five to 20 words. I eventually settled on six topics showing the top 15 words (shown below). Having listened to my fair share of Tim Ferriss podcast episodes, I thought these six topics were reasonable: Creativity, Psychology, Fitness, Health, Mindfulness, and Business.

Visualizing U.S. Carbon Intensity: 1990-2015

I used to be an energy and policy analyst, on both the client and consulting sides. I spent a lot of time analyzing the electricity sector, including forecasting carbon dioxide emissions. This, at one point in time, was very relevant at the national level. Former President Barack Obama made climate change a legacy issue, pushing through initiatives like the Clean Power Plan (domestic policy) and the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement (international). Businesses cared about these and other policies as they could create risks and opportunities for existing and future investments.

Targeting New Retail Locations

I then developed a profile of the "typical" city for this company: I calculated the average value for each of the 10 variables across the 11 cities. I used this profile to create a lead score for potential future locations. I compared potential locations' demographics against these average values: if a particular location's demographic performed better than the typical city, I would reward that location with one point.
